How To Choose the Right Countertop Material


Whether you’re designing a new space or simply remodeling a bathroom or kitchen, choosing a countertop can be quite the endeavor! In fact, a countertop can really make or break a space. From granite and marble to quartz, butcher block, and more, there are plenty of possibilities. Not only do you have to consider thelookbut the durability, ease of cleaning, cost, and more. 


Selecting the right countertop material is an important decision, and it comes down to aligning the material with your personal lifestyle. More than just preparing meals, countertops can receive wear and tear from extensive daily use, school projects, spills, and other activities. Below are some options you may be considering:


Marble:A beautiful and aesthetically-pleasing option, marble is a heat-resistant surface that can be quite lovely in any space. However, it’s not super durable and can scratch and stain quite easily. If you have a big family and little kiddos running around, this may not be the best option. 


Butcher Block:If you love to experiment in the kitchen, this material is incredible for food prep. However, it’s not immune to showing spill stains or burns; plus, it can scratch easily. 


Stainless Steel:Want to create a chef’s kitchen in your home? A shiny stainless steel countertop can certainly be a great start. Not only is it spill-proof and stain-proof, it’s super easy to keep clean.  Of course, if you have kids, remember that fingerprints show up easily on stainless steel surfaces; so, you may have to clean these more than you’d like!


Granite:One of the most sought-after countertops is granite– and for good reason! These natural stone countertops are beautiful but expensive. However, it’s incredibly strong and durable which makes it great for big families who are really looking to stay in the home for a long time. Remember, since granite is porous, it can stain more easily and may require annual sealing.


Quartz:One could argue that quartz is the easiest natural stone to take care of. Engineered using ground stone and resin, these countertops don’t require regular sealing the way most granite and marble countertops do. Plus, quartz is non-porous– meaning it won’t stain or scratch easily. This is a great option for a really busy kitchen. 


Of course, any countertop is going to require some maintenance but no matter your daily routine, frequency of use and design preferences, there’s a beautiful and functional countertop that’s right for you.
